How to buy scanners?

Scanner shopping can be a confusing task, unless you know what you want and are aware of all your options. If you are planning to buy a new scanner, here are a few tips which will help you make an informed choice.

Flat bed scanners are extremely popular with both home and office users.  These scanners are easy to use and provide high quality output.  The entry level models among the flatbed scanners generally use the CIS (Contact image sensor) technology, which in laymen terms means, slightly lower quality output.  High end models on the other hand use the CCD technology, which ensures a high quality output.

Based on your needs you can choose the features you want in a flat bed scanner.  If you want to scan negative, slides and film strips, make sure the scanner comes with a built in transparency adaptor.

If you need the scanner for office use and have to scan multiple documents of different sizes, flatbed scanners with an automatic document feeder will be ideal for you. You may either choose a model with a built in document feeder or buy it as a separate accessory.

If you want to be able to scan documents on the go a handheld scanner or a portable sheet fed scanner would be ideal for you. The quality of the output of a handheld scanner, however, will depend on your dexterity as you will have to move it over the desired documents manually.  The sheet fed scanner would be useful for you if you need to scan only paper and not bound documents or books.  A lot of sheet fed scanners also come with the added feature of directly converting your printed text into editable Word, Adobe or excel format.

Finally, while shopping for scanners do have a look at some accessories like travel cases and relevant software.
