Buying a projector
There are essentially two main categories of projectors available in the market; the DLP’s needed for business and teaching presentations and projectors for LCD screens. The following buying guide will help you chose the right projector in both categories.
If you are planning to buy a DLP projector, a resolution of 1024x768 XGA or more would be ideal. You should make sure that projector is compact and easy to carry around. Do take the projection area into account as well before deciding on a projector. If the area is large you’ll need a projector with more lumens (2000 and above). Finally, you must ensure that the projector is user friendly. VGA inputs, a remote control, built in mouse capabilities and laser pointers are some of the essential features.
For DLP projectors you will also need screens (though you can project on a white wall, the screen would offer a better output). The size of the screen should depend on the viewing area available with you.
Before buying an LCD projector you must check for the following essential elements-
The contrast ratio- A good contrast ratio is a must for sharp and clear video images. Ideally a projector should have a contrast ratio of at least 250:1.
Color- For real life video images your projector must support a huge number of colors, 16 million or more would be ideal.
Brightness- You will need to adjust the brightness according to the light available in your viewing area, however, do make sure that your projector offers at least 1000 lumes.
Resolution- A good resolution means sharp images. A resolution or 1024x768 or more would be ideal for an LCD projector.
Compatibility- Your projector must be compatible with the video standard (such as NTSE, PAL, and SECAM) you require.
User friendliness- A remote control, built in speakers along with option of attaching external speakers, light weight and well labeled input panel, are some of the essential features of a user friendly projector.
Apart from the projector you will also need certain essential accessories like mounting kits, projector lamps, document camera and writing rolls (for presentations) etc. You can purchase these accessories based on your needs and budget.
